Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness is the second installment in Blizzard's long-running Warcraft series. It is an RTS that achieved great popularity on the multiplayer scene in its time. Compared to the first Warcraft, a few notable additions include naval and aerial units, as well as the ability to command units in groups of 9 (up from 4 in the original) as well as higher resolution graphics and the removal of the road mechanic. On the other hand a few aspects were dropped, such as missions in dungeon environments.

An expansion set, Beyond the Dark Portal, added one more environment (the swamp, reminiscent of those in the first game) and several hero characters as well as two more campaigns.

A re-release, known as the Battle.net edition, updated the game to Windows, fixed a few lingering bugs, and rolled the expansion set and the original into a single release. The file structure was changed somewhat in the process although many of the same formats can still be read with the correct knowledge.

Thanks to the inclusion of an official map editor, many custom maps were created.
