Gods Configuration Format

Gods stores its hardware and control settings in GODS.INI, a plain text file written by INSTALL.EXE. It is not compressed. The launcher GODS.EXE and the game both read it, to choose the intro, the graphics driver and the sound driver.

File format

The file is nine lines of text, each ending in CR LF. There are no keys or section names: the meaning of each line comes from its position.

Line Example Meaning
1 Sound Blaster Sound device
2 Colour VGA Graphics mode
3 Keyboard Control method, Keyboard or Joystick
4 Version 1.0 Always this text
5 072 Key for up, as a three-digit decimal keyboard scan code
6 080 Key for down
7 075 Key for left
8 077 Key for right
9 057 Key for fire

The example values are the defaults: the cursor keys (scan codes 72, 80, 75 and 77) and the space bar (57).

Sound devices

Text Driver Loaded by the intro
Beeper BPR.EXE PBEEPER.BIN (sound engine)
Adlib ADL.EXE PPLAYER.BIN + PMUSIC.MUS
Roland ROL.EXE PPLAYER.BIN + PTITLE.RL
Sound Blaster ADL.EXE PPLAYER.BIN + PGODMUS2.MUS + PDEMOSB4.SB
Tandy TDY.EXE PTANDY.BIN (sound engine)

The installer also displays the choices as "PC Internal Speaker" and "Roland LAPC-1", but writes the short names above to the file.

Graphics modes

The installer offers four choices: EGA, Colour VGA, Mono VGA and Tandy 16 colour. These select the graphics driver (EGA.EXE, VGA.EXE or TGA.EXE) and the matching intro (INTROE.EXE, INTROV.EXE or INTROT.EXE). Tandy also runs TGAME.EXE instead of GAME.EXE.
