The fact that this game has a midi music format very similair to that used in EA games must have confused me.
I used to and (some times still) play a lot of MS-DOS games and have also tried to reverse engineer and modify them. Programming languages I'm familiar with: Quick Basic, Visual Basic(.NET), assembly language, HTML, JavaScript/VBScript and some C/C++.

I have almost completely reverse engineered Cartooners' (year 1988/1989, developer: IDTA, publisher: Electronic Arts, MS-DOS version) actor file (*.act) format and made a program that import and export actor templates. It can be downloaded at:

Right now I have also made a start at analysing Cartooners' music (*.mus) files. Unfortunately I know very little about MIDI music and the specifics of how soundcards work. Although there is a lot of information in this regard on the internet, I could still use any help offered. A document describing what I already know about the *.mus file format can be downloaded at: [http://www.euronet.nl/users/swinkels/ .mus (music) file format information.]

Alright, I just made some progress. It appears that the last byte in a .mus file controls whether or not the music is restarted after the last note has been played. (0x80 = Restart the music. 0x81 = Stop playing the music.)

In an attempt to organize all the information I found and added myself, I made a minimal website which can be found at:
[http://www.euronet.nl/users/swinkels http://www.euronet.nl/users/swinkels]

Alright, I moved the Cartooners *.mus (music) format information to a wiki: [http://fileformats.archiveteam.org/wiki/Electronic_Arts_MUS Electronic Arts MUS]. Since I've little experience with wiki's it's a bit sloppy. I'll likely try to clean it up a little later.

It might have taken a while, but I finally noticed your reference to OpenTitus, I also took a look at the website with technical soundcard information. With regard to OpenTitus, though it is a project in which some one else appears to have reverse engineered a game's music file format, I'm not sure how useful it might be for me when it comes to reverse engineering Cartooner's music files. As far I know Titus the Fox/Moktar was developed by a completely different developer and uses different file formats.

Regarding the page about sound cards you linked to, I have found similar pages before and I have had some success with programming for soundcards in Qbasic. You might want to look at this tutorial I wrote years ago: [http://web.archive.org/web/20010329195600/http://www.euronet.nl/users/swinkels/tutorial/sounds.htm Qbasic sound(card) tutorial]. Not too long ago I wrote a Qbasic program dealing with frequency modulation. Still I find the soundcard page you referred to quite technical.

I used to and (some times still) play a lot of MS-DOS games and have also tried to reverse engineer and modify them. Programming languages I'm familiar with: Quick Basic, Visual Basic(.NET), assembly language, HTML, JavaScript/VBScript and some C/C++.

I have almost completely reverse engineerd Cartooners' (year 1988/1989, developer: IDTA, publisher: Electronic Arts, MS-DOS version) actor file (*.act) format and made a program that import and export actor templates. It can be downloaded at:
[http://www.vbforums.com/showthread.php?759753-Cartooners-Actor-Viewer-export-and-import-actors VBForums post]

Right now I have also made a start at analysing Cartooners' music (*.mus) files. Unfortunately I know very little about MIDI music and the specifics of how soundcards work. Although there is a lot of information in this regard on the internet, I could still use any help offered. I also made a document describing what I already know about the *.mus file format and wrote a crude music file generator which can be downloaded at: [http://www.euronet.nl/users/swinkels/cmg.zip cmg.zip]

Alright, I just made some progress. It appears that the last byte in a .mus file controls whether or not the music is restarted after the last note has been played. (0x80 = Restart the music. 0x81 = Stop playing the music.)

Hello! :)

I see that you seek information regarding soundcards. In case you've missed it, here's an excelent guide regarding SB:
http://web.archive.org/web/20100425014332/http://www.shipbrook.com/jeff/sb.html

In addition, feel free to check out the standalone OPL player in the OpenTitus project (sourceforge). It uses a modified version of DosBox' OPL emulator.

Have a nice day! :)
